Tax Compass| How to Find My Chinese Tax ID (Tax Number) as a Foreigner

If you are a foreigner working in China, your home country may ask for your Chinese Tax ID (known as the Taxpayer Identification Number, or TIN) when you file your global income tax return.

So, how do you find it? Here is a simple, action-oriented guide.

Option 1: Ask Your Employer (The Easiest Way)

Your employer in China already has your Tax ID in their payroll system. Here is exactly what to ask them to do:

1. Log into the company’s Individual Income Tax (IIT) withholding system (called 【自然人稅收管理系統扣繳客戶端】).
2. Go to "Employee Information Collection" (人員信息采集).
3. Find your name in the employee list and click on it.
4. Open the "Foreign Personnel Information" (境外人員信息) section.
5. Look for the field labeled "Taxpayer Identification Number" (納稅人識別號).

That number is your Chinese Tax ID.

Option 2: Visit the Local Tax Bureau (If Employer Cannot Help)

If your employer cannot find it, you can go directly to your local Tax Service Hall (稅務局 ). Commonly bring:

1. Your original passport (the same one you used to register for work in China).
2. A copy of your work permit or residence permit (if available).

A tax officer can look up your Tax ID in the system for you.

Important Notes

1. Can I check it myself online?
No. Individuals cannot directly log into the company’s tax system. You need your employer’s help or a visit to the tax office.

2. Does my Tax ID ever change?

Usually, no. However, if your passport number changes, your Tax ID may also change. Always update your new passport with your employer and the tax bureau.

3. What if no one can find it?

This likely means you have never filed a personal income tax return in China.
